Amici Chamber Choir

About Us

AboutUs_1.png

The Amici Chamber Choir was established in 1986, by Nigel Springthorpe, so that that experienced and enthusiastic amateur singers could enjoy performing choral music to a high standard.

During its history, Amici has had six musical directors, Nigel Springthorpe, Gary Peacock, Jeremy Haneman, David Gould, Rebecca Lodge, and currently we are fortunate to be led by Paul Jeanes an accomplished local choral conductor, organist and a versatile musical director.

The choir celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2016 with an acclaimed performance of the Brahms Requiem at St James’ Church, Piccadilly, conducted by Rebecca Lodge. Therefore 2026, the choir celebrates its 40th Anniversary and in March performs JS Bach’s St John Passion with an exceptional line up of soloists and the Dei Gratia Baroque Ensemble.

The choir draws its members from across north and west London and consists of 38 singers. It currently performs three concerts a year in Pinner, Harrow and occasionally central London. The repertoire covers both sacred and secular works, from Renaissance to music of the present day. For example, in 2024 we were honoured to perform the premiere of a Requiem by Pete Shelley, dedicated to his late wife.  More recent highlights have been the performance of a contemporary “Missa de Buenos Aires” by Palmeri, know affectionately by the choir as the “Tango Mass”, with accordion and instrumental ensemble.  This we paired with the contrasting 10 part “Stabat Mater” by D.Scarlatti, which we found both challenging and moving.

Choir members regularly take opportunities to sing with and support other choirs.

In May 2010 some members of the choir took part in a performance of Mahler's Resurrection Symphony with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall, conducted by Marin Alsop. In 2013 members sang for the late Queen Elizabeth II during her Diamond Jubilee celebrations and in May 2016 the choir went on tour to Holland with Hillingdon Choral Society and again in May 2024 on a tour to Belgium. This year 2026 several members are joining them on tour to France.  Members also recently took part in a concert by our local Trinity Orchestra, singing the choral elements of The Planets by Holst.

Rehearsing weekly in a friendly and supportive atmosphere, our singers develop their musicianship while forming lasting friendships. Our repertoire is always interesting and eclectic and our enjoyable rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings from 7:30 - 9:30pm in Pinner Methodist Church, Love Lane Pinner. We are an auditioned choir and we welcome new members who love singing a broad classical repertoire and who seek to develop the high standards of musicianship, for which we constantly strive.
